DRONES

This is the version of Barack Obama ‘Hope’ Style poster.
Matt Bellamy, lead singer and musician of the band Muse; recreated in Shepard Fairey’s style.

Drones

There are a few changes I’d like to change such as placing the highlight on Matt’s face or changing the font to Couture.
I’d say this is a tutorial exercise with exploring with illustrator and getting to know where all the tools are. I rushed through with this project, so there are parts that I missed out on. I’m not entirely proud of the hair as it could have been much smoother, as well as adding details on the ear. I do not know how to draw ears so I entirely skipped out for ‘stylistic’ reasons. I do like how the textured lines turned out out and how it’s effectively resembles Fairey’s style.

Lab Rat

I haven’t posted in a while instagram (@chairo_neko) plug ins for life, or here on wordpress. Got a whole lot of stacks to show my rushed progress in my first assignment.

most of my art ideas are mostly spontaneous, and I have no idea what will come on next. if something come up I would put it down. I usually get scared of not getting any more ideas in the future. I would scribble a lot of thumbnails on my sketchbook to get a basic idea from it, then find a shit ton of images online. draw, submit on instagram. Simple process.

This is something I could relate because this is still an experimental phase, or maybe I should’ve waited to go into uni. Take a gap year or something like that. I’ve rushed way too quickly into the arts. The uni I go to doesn’t exactly do fine arts. I’m still exploring.
My goal is to become a fine artist, but something inside me wants to do something else. Since this is a ‘phase’ of art I’m going through I may just do surrealism and psychedelic arts altogether.

Referenced pictures are at the bottom, apologies in advance for the dead rodents.

All in all I’m not being as productive as much I should have 5 weeks prior to all this. Maybe I just have stick up my arse, and shouldn’t be complaining in the first place.

Beatrix Potter – My Inspiration

Helen ‘Beatrix’ Potter is an English Author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist. Though her first name is Helen, she is more popular by her middle name, Beatrix. Her most Iconic works the Tale of Peter Rabbit; as well as her other works: Jemima Puddle or Tom Kitten.

She is one of my inspirations that aspired me to do illustrations and art. Her books turned into an animation – Peter Rabbit and friends. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen when I was a child. I loved this animation so much that I would tear up hearing the intro of the song.

The way she conveys the personifications and storytelling in her work, interlocks together that both children and adults can relate to. The reason why is; her clarity on words, simple, plain and effective language.

Other than her story telling is her illustrations. Her medium would consist of watercolour. The soft rendering of their fur or the rendering of the environment. Her art remains constant, something I aim to please (soon). As she was a natural scientist before she became an author. She’d draw many different environments, animals or plants. Whether it is as small as fungi or as large as the forest on the page.

The way she inspires me is not quite direct, but lets me draw in a surrealistic way. Playing with the anatomy of the human body or simply personifying animals; as shown in majority of her artworks. I’d like to one day, master traditonal mediums before going all digital. Though they are different worlds, I’d like to combine both in some way; and not just scan and draw over it but let it intercept and unify it.

Her previous career as a natural scientist brilliantly shows through her works. She illustrates it to peek in to another world, as if animals were to live in the 1900s. It’s amazing to one of her passions is fuelled into another medium, illustrations and creative writing.

Palm Tree

This is my 3rd project out of 9. From here on I’m most likely to produce vector like images, despite this assessment is extended towards friday. I still appreciate its details in it’s geometrical form. I am still going for surrealism but not in its typical medium of a painting style.
I think it’ll be much more easier to produce art in illustrator rather than photoshop. I am still experimenting, but I find that illustrator is like a simplified version of photoshop.
In my dorm there’s 2 giant palm trees outside my window, and thought of a pun. I thought it would be hilarious to just put a hand and a tree together to make a palm tree. It sounded a lot funnier in my head…

I picked the dark blue
Colour Variations

I played a lot with the colour theory, whether to go with either the top row. The blue and pastel yellow drawing in the middle captured my attention a lot more than the others did.

I used multiple hands to draw on. I wanted to add my own style, so I used low poly shapes; draw by the pen tool. *More references linked at the bottom. I liked the thermal colour palette as it really popped out from the blue; it also had a cool effect on the low poly shapes. I had to draw my own palm trees with custom leaves as there weren’t many good picture I wanted on a palm tree.

I’d say the most helpful tools in the process would be:

-pen
-opacity
-layers

I’m starting to understand how these layers work in illustrator, it’s just knowing what part of the picture goes where and to not make sure it won’t overlap each other.

These pictures were all sourced from google images. and it’s original link pinned on pinterest.

Finalised Self Portrait

This is the finalised version of my self portrait.

self-Portrait

This took a lot of trial and error, when using Photoshop. In my future paintings, I would like to add more refined texture especially when rendering fur or the translucency of the water. I tried to reflect light on the mask, but with the set brushes I downloaded; it’s more smoother instead of textured.
There’s a lot of styles that I want to produce. One of them being surrealism. Other styles that I’d also like to try would be minimalism/vectoring. seeing clean lines or a iconagraphic style of a drawing looks quite satisfying. I like to see most of my art with smoother transitions and rendering and not just blocks of colour.
In surrealism, it captures another dimension of reality and fantasy.

Through out the whole drawing process I used are found on here
http://digitalbrushes.tumblr.com/.
It’s a website that give away free brush sets, and I think they’re good for most beginners. Depending on the brush set used.

There is some refinement, I’d say to a degree. Right is before and the left is after.
Even with the refined lips, there’s something on the right that makes it look more unique. Even thought the lips are flat, it has this texture that makes it stand out from the smooth skin.

Water those! Hair update

A lot but surely, I am getting use to Photoshop. I’ve been playing with it’s opacity and I think it’s a good way to get a smoother gradient between 2 colours.

The seafoam is a bit thicker than I would like it to be.

After thinning out the foam it’s seams more cleaner.yet the colour of the ocean lacks light and transparency.

I like the overall process of digital painting. I want to improve on the opacity of the water. By adding green hues, it allows the illusion if transparency. In this case it looks more opaque than it was before hand. It has added highlights, but I’m afraid adding too much light and darkness would ruin my progress.

Thank goodness for ctrl + z. I’ll never understand I didn’t live without it. I’ve started to create more layers on the painting. So far so good. I just have to remember to change the layers to the right one. There’s alot to uncover about adobe. I’m looking forward to see a small boost in following after posting more digital pics on instagram hahaha.

Update self portrait

This is a coloured version of the drawing

This is a slow process of how I would use photoshop. It looks better without the outlines as shown in the previous 2 images. As of now, it is a colour foundation of the entire piece. Depending on how fast I finish, I’d like to actually post before this whole thing is due…
After this illustration, I’ll be focusing moreover on the exaggeration of the human body; such as the number of limbs or facial features. other future digital drawings would also include random objects or reflect a certain past event. (formed in a dream-like perspective)
This style I have developed so far in digital is more cartoony rather than a more realistic approach I had in mind. I think further experimentation and tutorials will further help my studies. I will soon post this on Instagram once this image has been more refined to my liking.

Images for further references.
My illustrations overall look quite fundamental, but with further practice and consistent uploads I might be able to create a following on instagram. This also reflects on tradtional art as well.

Self portrait surrealism

I’ve always been interested in the art movement surrealism. I want to apply this style into my digital arts in the future.

Initial concept

I think it’ll be easier to do self portrait as a 1st post. Introducing my art and its style. I picked the bear because it’s my favourite animal. The flowing water is like going with the flow; no matter the space. The egg is is like inexperienced first year in uni. :v

By Lek Chen

The art piece by Lek Chen is discovered via pinterest. I like their style and the soft glow of the skin. It’s something I’d like to achieve in the near future. I prefer to do more drawings and painting as it feels much more freeing to make mistakes and live with it. With digital drawings, the ctrl + z is even more convenient. I don’t have much fear with making any mistakes in illustrator.
